What are we doing?

Puerto Corrubedo - A Coruña

The moment of truth, we had had some breakfast and today was an exciting day as we were due to leave the Atlantic coast and enter Biscay with our first visit to A Coruña. Ian went to the bow put his foot in the button to operate the anchor windlass and … it came straight up. I think I remember myself says 'oh ye of little faith" or words to that effect. We started out head to wind and could not sail, not a great start to the day but with good crew I decided to disappear down stairs and make some bread and scones. Everything has to be done by guess work because scales do not work on a moving boat. The sad thing is I bought some "cups" and found a recipe book that had all measurements in cups as well as weight. Sadly the "cups" are in Linda's kitchen and didn't make it to the boat. never the less I did my best.

As we went around the point the angle of the boat changed to the wind and we were able to pull out the sails. It was a lovely journey the coastline was very attractive with the blue skies and gentle conditions but this is not the case always as Finisterre has a fearsome reputation.

We arrived around 6pm and as soon as we tied up I went to check in. I claimed my CA discount and we were soon out for dinner. What a lovely place A Coruña is, the architecture is unique and I have added some photo's as examples. We made a poor choice of restaurant, it looked lovely but it wasn't. After dinner we had a walk through the town and wished we had more time as tomorrow we will leave after a visit to a supermarket to get some fresh food for the journey.

As we walked through the town square we say that they had erected a statue to Maria Pita who organised an attack on the British who had taken control of the town. The men having run away were shamed by this French Bodica (or should I say Joan of Arc, she looks more like Bodica). Upon her return with the men the British then fled in their boats.

  • The awful Maria Pita
