What are we doing?

Day 25 Oban

Yesterday we left Loch Aline on our way to Oban. We are waiting for a new propeller to arrive and the dealer says he is expecting it on Wednesday so we decided to move, three days in the same spot and the boat will start to take root.

We looked in the Clyde Cruising Clubs guide and the Cruising Association app "Captain's Mate" and Navionics and selected a small anchorage in Loch A Choire which has a popular restaurant called "The Boathouse" on approach Linda announces that "The Boathouse" is only open from Thursday to Sunday, it seems that quite a few places on Scotland think that tourists go home Monday-Wednesdays, I don't know why.

We nosed our way in and found to our disappointment that the wind had followed us around and the whole anchorage looked quite bleak so we chose to move to an anchorage suggested by Nigel.

Off we went it was only a forty minute drive across the channel to a bay which was north of Eriska( See photo). It looked nice and protected and for the most part it was but strangely this too seemed to suffer from winds following us in but it was not a problem.

What was a problem was that this was even less interesting than Loch A Choire. Worse, and we only found this out after we were anchored and half way through lunch that high speed small ferries go flying past making a horrid wash. I am amazed at the speed they are allowed to travel at in confined waters. The choice was poor and I would not go there again. Fortunately there were only two an hour and they stopped around 7pm.

After breakfast I called the Yamaha dealer who told me yes he was expecting our propeller today, so we up-anchored and went to Oban. We had been told by friends to stay at Kerraera which has a small marina opposite the town centre of Oban with a regular ferry service.

We were going to pick up a buoy as it was cheaper than a berth but their charging structure meant that for a boat of our length the charge was hardly any different so we took a berth in the marina and as our dinghy is out of action it was a good decision.

Sadly the arrangements at the marina had changed and they now run a restricted ferry service and charge for it so tomorrow we are going to stump up and pay for a berth in the main Oban marina where we can just walk to the shops etc.

Linda cooked and Italian meal and we bought (ouch) a French Film on "Prime", "The Well Diggers Daughter" it was fantastic and definitely worth the cost. It started one of our favourite French actors Daniel Actuel. It was written by the same author who wrote Jean de Florette.

Needless to say our propeller did not arrive. Let's hope it turns up tomorrow.
