Hamble - Dartmouth

Graham and I had an early start, the boat was due to be lifted at Lymington at 8:45. We left a bit to early and our journey benefited from more tide and we arrived at 8:30. As soon as we tied up to the waiting pontoon four men arrived and we headed off for breakfast. Fourty minutes later the boat was heading back into the water with a clean bottom and we were off. The original plan was to head for Salcombe but that is two hours on from Dartmouth and it was touch and go if we could get there in daylight.

We had a cracking sail all the way to Portland Bill when the seas turned as they do inevitably in Lyme Bay. As we proceeded the squalls that we had managed to dodge all the was so far finally caught up with us and oh boy the rain. I have hastily put up the biminey to act as an umbrella but the canny rain knew it only needed to come in sideways to foil my cunning plan. Graham and I hid below. As we approached Dartmouth we were between a rock and a hard place and had to get out to take down the sails. It was awful, the rain was like stairods the sea was churning and the boat rolling. We entered the harbour and whilst the rolling stopped the wind and rain dod not abate if anything it got worse. It too another fourty minutes to tie up.

Drenched we went below to shower and eat the lasagne that had beekn kindly made by Ginny. It was very welcome. Tomorrow we plan to go to Salcombe… we will see what the weather gods have to say…
