Figueria da Foz to Nazare

Yesterday we were due to travel to Peniche but the night before the marina cancelled the booking despite the WCC booking over six months ago. The stress levels rose with the organisers as there are few alternatives along the Portuguese coast and each leg is quite long as it is. Luckily they were able to get us all into Nazare which meant we had a short sail of only 35 miles, the payback is on Thursday we will have to go 75 miles instead of just 55.

Nazare is an interesting place, if you look at the main photo for this post and look at the entrance you can see that there is a huge ravine in the sea bed that leads right up to the entrance. The helps set up huge waves and as a result they hold world championship competitions for surfing here. Needless to say when the sun came out and I said I would like to go to the beach in the afternoon. We walked along the promenade and saw some waves so we went for a closer look… not a chance the waves were bigger than houses, no one was allowed to even paddle!

The WCC had not expected to be in Nazare so nothing was really organised except a fairly terrible lunch, which is not bad going because most of the meals have been brilliant. Afterwards we went up a cable car to the cliff top where we could see an overview of the bay and sat at in a bar drinking Rosé wine looking at the view.

I have added a couple of photo's of a historic bull ring as I forgot to post these earlier and if I went back and added them no one would see them.

  • Linda and Gwyn a lighter moment.
  • What a place to have a drink it was lovely.
  • Where is Marcus Aurelius when you need him?
  • It was nearly 100 years old.
