Bayona (Baiona) Roman Ruins and local mills

Whilst England has been basking in temperatures of 29 and 30 degrees it has been a rather cool 15 degrees in Galicia.

This morning we were collected by coach from the yacht club and taken to some Roman ruins. The area is now a minor tourist trap with a cafe, restaurant and some shops. In one of the photos Linda can bee seen studying bottle openers for some reason.

After that we were loaded back on the coach and taken to a local hill where the springs had allowed the locals to cover the hill with mills. Each family building their own to a similar design. They are now preserved and in local authority control. Unlike British water mills where the wheel looks like a hamster exercise machine, the water wheels in these buildings operates horizontally. I am not sure why it doers not look as efficient but it might be due to the shallowness of the water.

Downhill from the mills is a rather splendid restaurant where we spent the rest of the afternoon. The story is that the owner was once a banker and was sent to re-posses the restaurant building which at the time was used by an aged local eccentric artist. The young bank worker felt so sorry for the artist that he bought the building and allowed the artist to remain. When the artist died he converted the building into a restaurant and is has been done beautifully.
